OVERVIEW

Day 1 – Day 3

Arrive into Durban and collect your hire car from Europcar and make you way to Umhlanga Rocks- Check-in at Oyster Box Hotel for a 2 night stay in a Classic Room on a Bed and Breakfast basis- The elegant Classic Garden Facing Room overlook the hotel’s lush, tranquil gardens.

Standing majestically on Umhlanga’s beachfront overlooking the Indian Ocean and the iconic lighthouse, The Oyster Box is the ultimate in colonial charm and style. Stay in one of the 86 luxurious rooms and suites, either sea or garden facing, decorated in calming colours and antique colonial style furniture. The hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool on a terrace with a bar, an award winning Spa, 24 seater cinema and various options for dining.

Day 3 – Day 6

Check-in at Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in Standard Twin/Double Room on a Dinner/Bed and Breakfast basis for 2 nights- Closer to the hotel, these rooms look out onto the dam. Open plan sitting and bedroom area, en-suite bathroom and separate water closet! (King size beds or Twin beds).
Cleopatra is a gourmet getaway tucked deep into the KwaZulu Natal’s Drakensberg Mountains surrounded by the Giants Castle Nature Reserve. Beautifully situated on the edge of a trout filled dam, alongside the Little Mooi River, the soaring mountains rise majestically from the bottom of the garden. Individually decorated, the 11 rooms at Cleopatra are fast becoming world renowned for the innovative and creative décor. Guests can begin the day with breakfast, enjoy home-made cakes and pastries in the afternoon, and a sumptuous meal when dinning. After dinning, guests can relax in front of the fireplace. Cleopatra's helpful hosts are happy to arrange for excursions or viewings of local bushman paintings and guests can enjoy exploring the area either on foot or by rental bike, a swim in mountain streams, or trout fishing.

Day 6 – Day 9

Check-in at Fugitives Drift Lodge in a Luxury Suite on a Full Board basis for 2 nights- The Spacious, luxury en-suite cottages each have a private verandah affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge- Various tours and activities available
The spectacular Fugitives’ Drift property, a 5000 acre Natural Heritage Site, overlooks both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, and includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment. If one tried to dream up geography and topography for the clash between two great nations, one could hardly come up with a more fantastic scene than this one. It was here that David and Nicky Rattray pioneered Heritage Tourism in South Africa and created an award winning lodge for visitors to savour this extraordinary saga. The Lodge have spacious and luxurious en-suite cottages which all have private verandahs and broad views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The Lodge has a swimming pool set in the colourful, well established gardens which are home to innumerable bird species.

• The Battle of Isandlwana, 22nd January 1879. British defeat or Zulu victory?
Breakfast at 06:50.Depart at 7:30 for Isandlwana listening to a tape narrated by David Rattray playing in the vehicle explaining the background to the Anglo-Zulu War. There is a stop at 9:00 for a comfort break and to view the museum at Isandlwana. The lecture on the battlefield begins at 9:45 until around 11:45, when tea, coffee and refreshments are served. The lecture takes place half way up the hill. Please let us know before you set off if you have difficulty walking so that the lecturer can make an alternative plan.
Another tape, this time describing the story of the survivors and events after the battle of Isandlwana is played en-route back to the Lodge or Guest House, returning for lunch at 13:00.
The battle of Rorke’s Drift, 22nd January 1879.An account of this epic defence against impossible odds – an action in which 11 V.C.’s were won.Departs at 15:00 (winter) or 15:15 (summer). Guests have time to look through the museum at Rorke’s Drift before the lecture begins at 16:00. There is very little walking involved. The lecture concludes around 18:00 and guests are then given the opportunity to look around the memorials and graveyard before returning to the Lodge.

Day 9 – Day 12

Check-in at Mkuze Falls Lodge in Luxury Chalet on a Full Board with Activities basis for 2 nights- Each chalet has a viewing deck; mini-bar; telephone; safe; overhead fan; air-conditioning; mosquito net; en-suite bathroom; secluded plunge pool and outside shower

Located along the northern bank of the Mkuze River, in the heart of KwaZulu Natal, strategically positioned on the Kruger Park-Swaziland-Durban routes and about 6 hours’ drive North of Durban. Overlooking the Mkuze Waterfall, the lodge features nine luxuriously appointed Thatched Chalets and one Safari Suite, accommodating eighteen guests in utmost comfort and style. All these rooms have a breathtaking view of the river, bush and mountains. Private plunge-pools and an outside shower provide a wild but intimate touch alongside the gratifying luxury of the air-conditioned bedroom. The peace, scenery and style of the lodge allows for a calm atmosphere amidst the elegant decor. Return to Durban for you onward flight back to the UK or extend you stay in South Africa or add on a beach stay in the Indian ocean.
